Anne Beaumont clicked on the television. Time for the news and some well-deserved relaxation. Her friend Holly Nelson sat next to her on the couch.

“You don’t mind, do you? I just want to catch up.”

“No, it’s fine. I know you seldom turn off. I’ve known you too long.”

They’d been college lovers, sorority sisters who went too far. They both remembered those times with a certain fondness, albeit each woman recalled different things. Sometimes they were astounded at how differently they had perceived their relationship. Love renders you certifiably insane, Holly told her once. You can’t see the forest because you don’t see the tree until it hits you smack in the forehead. When you’re on the ground with a severely bruised cranium, you begin to understand how you lost your way.

Anne was inclined to agree with her; however, she continued to make poor choices in lovers. Her career choices were touched with gold, while her love life stank like a barn in need of much attention. Still, she couldn’t keep her va-jay-jay in her pants, as Holly told her.

“Oh, my god, there she is,” Anne said, pointing to the television.

“There who is?” Holly asked, looking blankly at the screen.

“Jane!”

“Who?” Holly asked.

“Jane, you know, the activist I told you about, young, dynamic, dangerous, and simply adorable.”

“Jane? Let me guess, your latest infatuation.”

“Yes,” Anne said, becoming totally engrossed in the television.

“She doesn’t have any hair.”

“She shaves her head,” Anne said, never taking her eyes off the television.

“Obviously. I didn’t think you were attracted to those types of women.”

“I’m not,” Anne said.

“But...”

“Hair grows. Look, they got in to see Benton Peugh. How the hell did they manage that?” Anne pondered.

“I don’t quite understand the attraction.”

“Wait until you meet her. Do you remember Fiona Graves from school?”

“Attractive woman,” Holly said.

“Very. Jane’s her sister. I met her at a dinner party.”

“She doesn’t seem like dinner party material.”

“It was at her sister’s. I wonder if she liked the flowers I sent,” Anne said.

“You sent her flowers?”

“Yes, it was an apology for making her angry. We went for coffee, I hit a nerve, and she told me to fuck off. So I sent flowers to try to smooth things over.”

“Are you feeling okay?” Holly said, touching Anne’s forehead. “You don’t have a fever. You’re not losing your mind, are you?”

“No, why?”

“No reason,” Holly said.
